Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease: What it is & how to prevent it
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is a contagious illness caused by different viruses. Although common in young children who have not yet built up immunity, HFMD can also affect older children and adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is more likely for people to get Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in spring, summer, and fall. As you begin to plan for the warmer weather, make sure your facility is protected from the viruses that cause Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease.
HFMD causes fever, mouth sores, and a rash. Most people recover within 7 to 10 days without medical treatment; however, an infected person can have rare complications such as viral meningitis, or life-threatening brain inflammation. Since Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is caused by several different viruses, people can get it more than once.
Most people are contagious during the first week of illness, yet some remain contagious for weeks after their symptoms go away. Some people, especially adults, may not develop any symptoms but they can still spread the virus to others. The viruses can be found in an infected person’s saliva, mucus, blister fluid, and feces. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease can spread through close contact, coughing and sneezing, contact with feces or blister fluid, and by touching objects or surfaces that have viruses on them.
To reduce the risk of infection, it’s essential to disinfect regularly.
